Rest

There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Hebrews 4:9,10

The opening scripture speaks of a Sabbath-rest for the children of God. How inviting...It states that we enter into this rest by ceasing from our own work. How many of us need a break from the hustle and bustle of our society, even church work? The pressures that we operate under as Americans and unfortunately as Christians are insane. We are made to feel guilty if we are not constantly moving  or doing something.

I have a news flash...God ordains rest. He himself rested on the 7th day after creation. Furthermore, in the old testament, God ordained an entire year for rest called the year of Jubilee which indicates His perspective on rest. In the year of Jubilee debt was cancelled, servants were returned to their families,  and land was not plowed or harvested.  Interesting, if God ordered rest for the land, don't you think He is concerned about you?

This weekend I took some time to rest. I spent literally half the day or more in bed. It was wonderful. Yes, I fell behind on my housework and gardening, but guess what...there's always next week.

This week I encourage each of you to take out some time to rest. Resist the temptation to constantly "do" something and make a sincere effort to take in the beauty of God's creation and reflect over your life. As always...be encouraged!
