Delight

Writer: Gloria WigginsGloria Wiggins

Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

What are you delighting in? Is it the Lord or the things of this world? Often, when this verse is studied the focus is on God giving us the desires of our heart. God indeed will grant us the desires of our heart, but only if we delight in Him first.

At the risk of sounding cliche, we must make God our first priority. Don't allow yourself to be desensitized to this truth because you hear it so often. If any one statement bears repeating it is this one. God is God, but it is our choice to make Him Lord of our lives. We do this by yielding our desires to His, Why is it necessary to submit our desires, because the desires and passions of a man rule him? Once we surrender our desires to God then we allow Him to rule us. Don't fret over the word "rule". God is not a task master, He is a loving Father. He only desires what is best for us and once we trust Him enough to submit our passions, he will direct our hearts. It is entrusting ourselves (passions, desires, future) wholly to God that constitutes delight.

Delight in this sense, is not an emotion, but an attitude of the heart. We must become pleased with God and God alone. Before we can be entrusted with the desires of our heart, we must first show ourselves to be faithful to God.

This word is to encourage us to find our delight (pleasure) in God. True delight comes from Him who dwells within us through His Holy Spirit. Stop looking outside yourselves for pleasure, it is in you...be encouraged.
