Singleness of Heart

Teach me your way, O Lord and I will walk in your truth, give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. Psalm 86:11

We live in a society that takes pride in multitasking and compulsive busyness - by it's very nature it discourages the simplicity of a single pursuit or singleness of heart. The danger is that it keeps us engaged at a superficial level because we are simply executing tasks and not operating from the core of who we are - our heart. Don't believe the "gospel" of our pop culture that busyness and multitasking is productive...it's actually counterproductive

This week focus is on our heart - or singleness of heart. We take our text from the devotion of David.  A man most known to be a person after God's own heart. David, though far from perfect, was highly esteemed by God.  When Samuel was instructed to anoint the next king of Israel - he was told to look at his heart and not the outer appearance (1 Samuel 16:7).

What was so special about David's heart?...and why would David place a request for an undivided heart in the company of learning the ways of God and walking in truth? I believe the bible holds the answer.

While David failed and succeeded in many areas, he was consistent in his singleness of heart...an abiding love for God. Consider carefully his reflections. He desired to learn God's ways, to walk in His truth and he specifically asked for an undivided heart. There is a scripture that says The eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose heart is fully committed to him  (2 Chronicles 16:9). Interesting that God has to look for a fully committed heart. If He is looking, then it must be a rare find. What is your heart committed to? Is it soley committed to God or divided between His desires and yours?

This week I encourage you to ask God to give you the desires of your heart according to His plan and purpose for your life. Once He does, make that your single pursuit; in doing so you will be seeking and advancing his kingdom, and all other things will be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).  Be encouraged!
