Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." John 4:10
A Samaritan woman is at Jacob's well where Jesus is resting from His journey. Upon seeing her he ask for a drink. The Samaritan woman is astonished that Jesus is speaking to her and quickly points out that Jews and Samaritans do not associate with each other. Jesus abruptly responds with the opening scripture John 4:10.
The spiritual application of this verse is so timely for our society today. How many of us thirst? I'm not talking about a physical thirst, but a thirst in our soul - an intense longing or feeling of void. This thirst cannot be quenched with physical water but the living water that Jesus offers.
Jesus never identified what the woman's thirst was but he knew that she had one. Why else would he offer her living water. We all have a thirst in our souls. My thirst is not your thirst and vice versa.
Question: How are you trying to satisfy the thirst of your soul? We all have our different means. Our society is full of thirsty souls. It is evident from the extremes that mankind operates in - alcoholism, material possessions, status, drug addiction, sexual perversion, etc. We are driven by our sensual desires which is symptomatic of a deeper issue. God created us all with a "god sized" thirst that cannot be filled with any pursuits and/or acquisitions of this world.
This week I encourage you to drink from the living waters that Jesus offers which is fellowship with God through prayer and the study of Gods Word. Be encouraged, God can and will satisfy your deepest thirst. |
